Kindness in Waitī

We are so lucky in Waitī - we all help each other in our learnng journey! Kahleece - who has actually only been at school slightly longer than Annalise - has offered (unprompted) to help her fold her milk carton neatly. Beautiful to see such caring between students.

He aroha whakatō, he aroha puta mai. If kindness is sown, then kindness you shall receive. And so the cycle of kindness continues in Waitī. What a lovely place to be!

Athletics

Junior School Athletics will be held in the last week of Term 1. Here tamariki are practising their throwing skills. The precusor skills to shot-put, discus and javelin. It is neat to watch everyone give it their best shot! Ka nui te pai tō mahi tamariki mā!!!

Bike Safety at Ōtaki School

We have been learning about bike safety in Waitī Room 8.
When there are bikes on the track…..we stay back!!!!
Boom! Crash! Bang! No Helmet... No Brain!
This is a great song created by the students at Avalon Intermediate - helmets are
important whānau!

't' for toast!

Week 7 of Term 1 2019 we learned the sound 't'. We finished off the week by making toast! First we discussed as a class the steps needed to make toast. We did some shared writing to ensure we were safe when we made toast. Then everyone made their own toast! Learning life skills - being safe and negotiating turns - tu meke!

Tree climbing at Ōtaki School

We have a comprehensive physical education program at Ōtaki School - the tamariki learn a wide range of skills. In the Junior School we are undertaking a range of skills in the area of athletics. However, of a Friday afternoon, it can be lovely to go out to the 'native bush' area of our kura and enojoy the freedom and creativity it has to offer.
Perseverance, creativity, co-operation.

Kindness in Waitī Room 8

He aha te mea nui ō te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata! This post is to celebrate helpfulness in our class. Greg noticed that a couple of students were struggling to cut out the monkey they were making. He helped them without being asked by anyone. Thank you Greg! We love having you in our class!

Lunchtimes at Ōtaki School

We all sit together for the first ten minutes of lunch. We sit as a class - and eat our sandwiches first! Once we have had enough to eat after this first ten minutes tamariki can take their lunchboxes and pop them in bags and go and play. The duty teacher (the one in the pink vest) lets tamariki know when the ten minutes is up if for some reason I am not there. We have two duty teachers at least patroling the school grounds at break times to help students if they need it.

Helping hands

Working together, helping each other, guiding each other. Ka rawe tamariki ma!

Pikelits Yum!

The request has gone out from tamariki for us to do cooking - as much as possible!!! Through cooking children learn a valuable life skill. They grow in their confidence to undertake tasks and to try new things. They learn a lot about self management and patience too - as they took turns to do different jobs. They also learn real life application of fractions, measurement and reading skills.

The container arrives!!!!

We have been expecting the container to arrive all of this week! We were so lucky that it arrived during the school day so we could watch it be delivered. I think we were all impressed that the driver managed to get the truck through the gates unscathed!
It's so wonderful that we have this amazing set of bikes now with easy access from the container for all our tamariki to enjoy!

Bike Launch

After the launch we had hungry tummies! Luckily we were able to have a sausage sizzle and our lunches. Afterwards we had an iceblock. What a lovely way to continue our celebrations!

Bike Launch

Three students from each class were chosen to take the first ride on the bikes around the track. Waitī was proud to have Darius, Greg and Kingston as our ambassadors.

Bike Launch Ōtaki School

On Wednesday we welcomed the Korean Ambasador and the Korean War Veterans to our school. The Korean Embassy donated $10,000 dollars for our Bikes in School project. Bike Barn in Paraparaumu supported the school to acquire the bikes and bike helmets. Kahleece and Harlyn as the youngest in the school was selected with Tui the eldest in the school to cut the ribbon and launch the event. Well done to Tamihana and Harman for the part they played in welcoming our manuhiri.

Apple pie!

Last week we had been given some apples. Some of them had been bruised, so rather than waste them we made pie. We cut the apples carefully so we didn't cut ourselves. The we sprinkled the apples with cinnamon and sugar. Then we put strips of pastry on top. Yum!

D d d darts!!!!

We decided to take maths to a whole new level! Our phonics focus for last week was 'd'. Darts was something everyone wanted to give a go! Each balloon had a number on it. Each student took turns throwing three darts - the highest score was the winner. Tamihana did a fantastic job of recording the scores - ngā mihi ki a koe e tama! Kingston won the first round - Tamihana - the very last to throw in the class - won the second round. Well done everyone for taking part in something new!
